Shonda Rhimes’ impressive slate of series is expanding with the fast-paced, high-action drama Station 19, starting on Monday 25 June at 19:00 exclusively on M-Net channel 101. A spin-off of the popular, long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, fans will be happy to know that the series is set just three blocks away from the now iconic Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Having already introduced main character Andy Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz, Rosewood), in Grey’s Anatomy Season 14, the show’s first episode will also include a cameo from familiar faces in the form of Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson).

The series follows a group of heroic firefighters at Seattle firehouse Station 19, who risk their lives and hearts both in the line of duty and off the clock. All firefighters are also trained Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s). Working in 24-hour shifts, these professionals spend so much time together that they build relationships, unlike any others.

Practically raised at the station, Andy Herrera is a fierce and confident firefighter who is also the daughter of Captain Pruitt (Miguel Sandoval, Medium), the formidable head of the firehouse. Captain Pruitt was Andy’s primary inspiration and is a mentor to both Andy and lieutenant Jack Gibson (Grey Damon, Aquarius). Passionate and energetic, Jack is fearless – just the kind of guy you’d want coming to your rescue. While Jack may be a risk-taker, Andy plays by the rules – but when these two are together, sparks fly and opposites attract.

Andy’s best friend and confidant is Maya Bishop (Danielle Savre, Heroes). A former Olympic athlete, Maya has an innate competitive nature that pushes her to be the best firefighter in the house. Meanwhile, charming Dean Miller (Okieriete Onaodowan) is nothing short of dedicated and jumps at the chance to be a hero. He is also very aware of the appeal of a firefighter in uniform and is not afraid to use that to get a date or two with the ladies. Travis Montgomery (Jay Hayden, The Catch) is the heart of the station, keeping everyone on track and helping his fellow team members grow. After a traumatic event, Montgomery has also become a stickler for procedure and always keeps the newbies in check.

As the youngest member of the team, Victoria “Vic” Hughes (Barrett Doss, Iron Fist) is eager to prove herself as a crucial part of the Station 19 family. She often tends to meddle where she doesn’t belong, but rarely allows others insight into her personal life.

Rounding out the firehouse is the newest addition to Station 19: rookie Ben Warren (Jason George, Grey’s Anatomy). Ben traded in his scalpel at Grey Sloan Memorial for a fresh start as a firefighter, but has a hard time realising that emergencies in the field are vastly different from those at the hospital. Being the newbie again has its ups and downs, but Ben is learning from the best and is up to the challenge.

The team also works closely with Seattle PD and often has run-ins with one of Andy’s oldest friends (and former high school flame), Ryan Tanner (Alberto Frezza, Dead of Summer). After a distressing encounter brings Andy and Ryan closer together, it becomes next to impossible for these two to deny the attraction.

Scenes from Station 19’s pilot episode were reportedly filmed on location in Seattle – at the actual Firehouse 20, the regional Seattle Fire Department. This was due to the series creators who felt that the set should closely resemble a real firehouse. Athough the characters are fictional, the team behind the series would consult with Station 20 to ensure authenticity.

Stacy McKee (Grey’s Anatomy) serves as showrunner and executive producer, along with Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy, The Fixer, How to Get Away with Murder) and Betsy Beers (Grey’s Anatomy, The Fixer, How to Get Away with Murder). Paris Barclay (Pitch and Sons of Anarchy) serves as the producing director and executive producer of the series.

Station 19 starts on M-Net 101 on Monday 25 June at 19:00. Additional airings can be watched on Tuesdays at 11:35 and Thursdays at 07:00.

It is also available on the following DStv Catch Up platforms: Explora and DStv Now.
