Instead, doctors are rolling up their sleeves and backing themselves, becoming active stakeholders in building medical facilities for the future. Training a new generation of specialists, the Johannesburg Surgical Hospital is a cutting-edge medical centre where a group of determined doctors is creating a legacy of healing, innovation and hope in the heart of the country’s biggest metro. A big life Image : 15884
A big life𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟮 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. A once healthy and happy child who suddenly fell into the depths of depression and attempted suicide... Josh Crickmay’s story could have ended quite differently were it not for the unique and life-altering intervention of his parents, Kathy and Andrew. When their son - just 15 - became violent and endured bouts of severe depression, eventually dropping out of school, they sought medical help. After a year filled with hospital visits, Josh was diagnosed with high-functioning autism, a condition on the spectrum that affects the ability to communicate and socialise. The diagnosis was the turning point for Kathy and Andrew who decided that saving their only child meant taking drastic steps as a family. They quit their jobs to take him on a “Birding Big Year”: 365 days to spot and document 1000 species of birds. And so began a year of adventure that would eventually save Josh and provide him with much-needed purpose. Job scams Image : 15712
Job scams𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟬 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. It’s a startling statistic: almost 33 per cent of people living in South Africa are unemployed, many of them unemployable. It’s fertile ground for scammers who prey on desperate job seekers. In Matatiele in the Eastern Cape, a well-connected and widely known woman has become notorious for using her ties to a local mayor to dupe desperate jobseekers. Offering work at the municipality, she charges a small fee for her services but never delivers. And she’s not alone. In Gauteng, a rogue recruitment agency is one of several using the promise of jobs to defraud the desperate and already chronically poor. Carte Blanche investigates. Prophets for profit𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟮 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. ** Note that this is a re-upload of an earlier story. An additional blur was added to an image. The substance of the story remains unchanged. Edward van den Berg is a self-appointed visionary. After receiving a “commission from God", he established the Immanuel Theology Institute International. Inspired by the parable of Moses, and offering certificates, diplomas and degrees, the so-called Doctor, Professor, Chancellor and Archbishop of his own multicampus online university insists he’s leading his followers to the Promised Land. Trouble is, his institution isn’t government accredited. So the self-proclaimed disciple of the “Most High” established his own accreditation bodies to certify his courses. Carte Blanche investigates the “General” of God’s bogus university. Your favourite episodes are now available on Carte Blanche: The Podcast: https://bit.ly/PodcastCB

The Grand Dame Ellis Park𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟬 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. Emirates Airline Park, still popularly known as Ellis Park Stadium, has been the site of some of the biggest milestones in South African sporting history. In 1995, it hosted the Rugby World Cup Final – South Africa’s first major international sporting victory after years of isolation, and Nelson Mandela’s first trophy as president. Set in Johannesburg’s inner city, it’s a stadium steeped in history. But it’s suffering the consequences of Johannesburg’s steady decay. So, what does the future hold for this landmark, and will it be possible to turn around its fortunes without doing the same for the city of gold? Horror in the inner city Image : 15705
Horror in the inner city𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟬 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. It’s a Thursday morning in a hijacked building in Johannesburg’s inner city. A fire breaks out on the first floor and soon sets the dilapidated building ablaze. Trapped inside, dozens of people – men, women, and children - are unable to escape the flames. In the street below, onlookers frantically call for help as people attempt to save themselves by jumping from upper-storey windows. Hours later, as rescue workers pull the dead from the debris, the scale of the disaster becomes clear. Blame is soon shifted to NGOs working in the inner city by officials denying any culpability in the tragedy. But few could argue the victims would not have suffered such excruciating deaths had the warning of at least the past two decades been heeded. The same NGOs as well as the media and several politicians had been warning of the dangers posed by Jo’burg’s hijacked buildings. Yet the problem grew unchecked and now 77 people are dead. Sharp witted, talented and knowledgeable, Mots – as she’s affectionately known – has solidified her place among the giants of rugby commentary and analysis. Now, broadcasting to local and international audiences, she’s considered one of the industry’s leading lights. And, as sports fans prepare for next month’s Rugby World Cup, Mots has emerged as a beacon of inspiration for anyone who dares to follow their dreams. In the Springboks’ final home match before the tournament, Carte Blanche joined her pitchside. But it seems even their newfound standing in the hearts of South Africans couldn’t prevent a last-minute contractual dispute that almost caused them to miss their flight to the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Banyana are not alone. In a sport that has previously been the sole domain of their male counterparts, other national women’s football teams around the world are also demanding more money for playing in the upcoming tournament. Bested by Bester𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟵 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. Serial rapist and murderer, Thabo Bester was thrust into the spotlight late last year as it emerged that the notorious criminal had allegedly died in a horrific fire in prison. But this story took a bizarre turn when, just weeks later, Bester was photographed – alive and well - at a grocery store in Johannesburg. It took a team of investigative journalists to finally uncover how the murderer had strolled out of prison in a brazen escape. A manhunt for him and his lover, Nandipha Magudumana ended with the two being hauled back to South Africa from Tanzania. Now, as Bester awaits trial for numerous crimes related to the escape, Carte Blanche examines how he went from being a charming schoolboy to a ruthless killer. Finger-pointing in a time of cholera Image : 14551
Finger-pointing in a time of cholera𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟴 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. It’s a bacterial disease that causes severe diarrhoea and dehydration in patients. If left untreated, it can be fatal. Cholera is usually spread through contaminated water and is rarely found in developing countries with proper sanitation systems – countries like South Africa. But when several people in Hammanskraal - a stone’s throw from the country’s administrative capital, Pretoria - became violently ill and died, it became clear that the city had a deadly outbreak on its hands. Now, at least 20 people, including a three-year-old toddler, are dead. But this is a tragedy that’s been decades in the making and, despite a desperate bid via the Pretoria High Court to force the municipality to provide clean and safe drinking water, residents are now paying the ultimate price for government’s failures. Reading crisis𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟯𝟬 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. Teaching children to read is fundamental to their future success. But for a country already battling massive youth unemployment and an adult literacy crisis, it’s emerged that close to 80 per cent of grade 4 learners cannot read with understanding in any of the eleven official languages. Government was warned of the crisis and, in 2019, President Cyril Ramaphosa promised to prioritise reading through a National Reading Plan. But, through exclusive access, Carte Blanche shows how Department of Education documents reveal a plan in disarray, continuing to fail our children. Despite this, education officials continue to proclaim the National Reading Plan a success. Carte Blanche investigates. He sustains a skull and nose fracture, permanent brain damage and hearing loss. His life forever altered, he’s left with a rare condition in which noise leaks painfully through his brain. But that was just the beginning of his harrowing ordeal. Deadly encounters Image : 14510
Deadly encounters𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟳 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. It was described as an audacious prison break: the charred remains of an unidentified man lay in the now-infamous cell 35 at the G4S private prison in Mangaung while the man dubbed the “Facebook Rapist” made his escape. In a morbid ruse, his alleged accomplice, Nandipha Magudumana, later claimed the deceased as her customary law husband, Thabo Bester. Eleven months later and Bester, Magudumana and numerous alleged co-conspirators are behind bars. But while police tracked the two fugitives all the way to Tanzania, focus shifted to identifying the body left behind in cell 35. Now identified as Katlego Bereng, a man well-known to one of the accused, details of his brutal murder have shocked his family, leaving them with more questions than answers. Pitiful potholes Image : 14498
Pitiful potholes𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟯𝟬 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. Coffee Bay on the Wild Coast is one of the most pristine locations in South Africa. Home to a tourist favourite - the Hole in the Wall, also affectionately known as “izi Khaleni” or “the place of thunder” - it should be teeming with visitors. But few are brave enough to tackle the treacherous pothole-ridden 75-kilometre stretch of tarred road to get there. It’s just one example of the shocking state of many roads around the country; deep ditches and craters left unattended for so long, there’s often little trace of tar. It’s a symptom of the mismanagement and decline in service delivery plaguing municipalities across the country. Carte Blanche drives through three provinces in search of some of the country’s worst roads. Your favourite episodes are now available on Carte Blanche: The Podcast: https://linktr.ee/carteblanchetv
