If there’s one essential part of any police investigation, it's the case docket. Yet, how many times have we heard of criminals walking free because the docket is missing? These days you can just walk into a police station and pick them up off the desk, without even paying someone to 'make it disappear'.

STEALING DOCKETS UPDATE
In 2004 Carte Blanche showed the ease with which a police docket could potentially disappear. Whether opened on theft, assault or even murder, we showed the alarming lack of vigilance when it came to guarding the contents of the police’s files.

National Spokesperson Vish Naidoo said at the time that the South African Police Service would to do all they could to tighten security around the country in the handling of dockets. However, the phenomenon has continued, and it is common cause that police files still go missing.

Carte Blanche has continued to hear from victims of crime about this issue and NGOs have consistently voiced their concern regarding the lack of docket security.

In June 2018, Police Minister Bheki Cele said their recent crime-fighting strategy included a commitment to significantly improve aspects of the policing service, especially the investigation of crime and the processing of dockets.
