Chicken Run I & II

News

It may sound callous, but it’s a fact that commercial farmers producing hens for egg production dispose of day-old male chicks by gassing or macerating them. That’s the standard modus operandi. But not all farmers abide by the rules and some go to extraordinary lengths to conceal unacceptable practices.

CHICKEN RUN I & II UPDATE

In 2009 we revealed how one of the largest producers of day old chicks in the country was dumping its live male chicks in a dry cement dam, where they were left to die. Director of Boskop Layer Chickens, Jan Serfontein maintained during our interview that his company did not dispose of its male chicks in this manner, but following our exposé and an inspection by the NSPCA, the company was found to be in contravention of the Animal Protection Act.

The NSPCA told us it has been granted access to the facility and Boskop Layer Chickens do now comply with the correct procedures to put down male chicks.
