Carte Blanche, M-Netโ€™s flagship current affairs actuality programme, won big at the Genesis Awards held in Hollywood on Wednesday 20 April 2016. Carte Blanche was entered in the Brigitte Bardot International Award category where it won the award for Best International News Magazine for their multiple segments.ย

Carte Blancheโ€™s multiple segments were:

Wild Animals as Pets, part 1 and part 2 (Producer: Sasha Schwendenwein);

Driven Hunt, part 1 and part 2 (Producer: Kate Barry);

Canned Lion (Producer: Bernadette Maguire);

North West Rare Game Empowerment (Producer: Bernadette Maguire);

Faroe Islands Whale Slaughter (Producer: Michael Duffett);

Tiger Bones (Producers: Phillip Hattingh and Karl Amman);

Six alarming perspectives on the exploitation of South Africa's wildlife, an exposรฉ of a โ€œtiger sanctuary" in Thailand that breeds animals for traditional Chinese medicine, and whale slaughter in Faroe Islands.

Carte Blanche beat out the likes of National Geographic, the Discovery Channels, and many others. โ€œWe are absolutely thrilled to have won this award as it represents a win in some pretty illustrious company.โ€ Carte Blanche Executive Producer George Mazarakis said. โ€œPerhaps more importantly, it sends a signal that we South Africans care for animals and take a stand against cruelty and abuse, no matter where it occurs. That this is recognised on an international platform is in itself most gratifying.โ€

Now in its 30th year, the HSUS Genesis Awards honours individuals in the news and entertainment media for creating outstanding workย that raises awareness of animal protection issues.

Carte Blanche is South Africaโ€™s longest-running actuality programme. In addition to its fearless television journalism, Carte Blanche has also done whatever it can to make a difference in South African society. With the Carte Blanche Making a Difference initiative, more than R120 million has been raised to equip and renovate paediatric theatres, ICUs and high care wards at state academic hospitals. In March,ย Carte Blanche handed over the Infant High Care Unit to Sebokeng Hospital.
