His girlfriend calls him Red, we call him Deadpool. Or Wade Wilson. The foul-mouthed antihero is called Red for a reason: that superhero costume-suit-spandex-thing he wears. And with such crimson hues in mind, we thought weโ€™d take a look at some of our other favourite characters in red before watching Deadpool AKA Wade Wilson AKA Red in your M-Net Sunday night movie, Deadpool 2.

Darth Maul

Red is traditionally the colour of a Sith Lordโ€™s lightsaber, so if you see one in the Star Wars universe you could be in for a spot of bother. If the person wielding said red lightsaber is also red, then youโ€™re really in trouble. Thatโ€™s precisely the spot of serious bother a young Obi-Wan Kenobi and his mentor Qui-Gon Jinn find themselves in when they encounter Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I โ€“ The Phantom Menace.ย A Sith Lord who wields a red, double-bladed lightsaber, Darth Maul looks even more fierce thanks to a large daub of red face paint.

Hellboy

We loved Guillermo del Toroโ€™s film adaptation of the very red, very sweet half-demon, played with roguish relish by Ron Perlman. But weโ€™re also really excited about this yearโ€™s reboot starring David Harbour. Itโ€™s directed by Neil Marshall who has two Game of Thronesโ€™ episodes under his belt, so itโ€™s safe to say weโ€™re in good hands when it comes to this new fantastical adaptation of the crimson comic book character.

The Incredibles

Youโ€™ll notice a theme in this list: many of the characters either come from comic books or are superheroes, and this family is no exception. They first astounded us in 2004: super-strong Mr. Incredible, super-elastic Mrs. Incredible, and their children Violet and Dash who possess powers of invisibility and super-speed. In last yearโ€™s sequel, it was finally unveiled that baby Jack-Jack has powers too. And, of course, they all wear red suits with the all-important safety feature of NO capes.

Incredibles 2 airs on 17 March at 17:00 on M-Net Movies Premiere channel 104.

Iron Man

This superhero built his red superhero suit himself: Mr. Tony Stark AKA Iron Man. Although the characterโ€™s been portrayed on television since the โ€˜60s it wasnโ€™t until 2008 that he received a live-action feature film. Portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. Iron Man launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the golden age of superhero cinema. Look out for the red-suited superhero in this year'sย Avengers: Endgame.

Jean Grey

Like Tony Stark, Dr. Jean Grey AKA Phoenix been around for decades. The character made her live-action feature film debut in 2000 with X-Men. From donning a tailored red suit in the first movie to going full Phoenix in a villainous red in the third movie, the character was more than just flaming red hair. Played by Famke Janssen in the first threeย X-Menย movies, as well as in X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Wolverine, her fiery feathers were handed down to red-haired Sophie Turner in 2016โ€™s X-Men: Apocalypse. This year, Turner will reprise the role in Dark Phoenix.

Jessica Rabbit

A mash-up of live-action and animation, Who Framed Roger Rabbit features the title characterโ€™s red-haired wife Jessica Rabbit looking svelte, sexy, and sultry in a red dress so memorable itโ€™s landed her on our list. If youโ€™ve never fallen in love with an animated character before, donโ€™t feel bad. After all, she was drawn that way. ย

Special Mention

Speaking of ladies in red, we canโ€™t finish this list without a mention of the fleeting glimpse but lasting impression of the woman in the red dress in The Matrix. You canโ€™t fail to spot her, but you might have missed that the extras hired for the crowd are mostly twins and triplets, who were hired to create a feeling of duplicated characters in a simulated environment.
