It’s very likely die-hard Star Wars’ fans have already watched Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, this week’s Sunday night movie on M-Net. Of course, that won’t stop them watching it again.

If you’ve never watched a Star Wars’ movie, Rogue One still works well as a stand-alone movie, providing plenty of action, drama, and heart. But if you feel the need for a little 411 on Rogue One before watching it on channel 101, check out our guide below.

  1. Rogue One is based on A New Hope’s opening scroll, which means it falls between Episode’s III and IV.
  2. So if you wanted to watch the feature films in order of the story’s chronology you’d have to watch Star Wars Episodes I, II, and III (released in 1999, 2002 and 2005), followed by Rogue One (released in 2016) and end with Episodes IV, V, VI and VII (released in 1977, 1980, 1983 and 2015). Here’s Mark Hamill (star of the original trilogy) trying to figure it out:

  1. Who are the stars of this Star Wars’ story? It’s an impressive list including Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen and Forest Whitaker.
  2. And the director? That would be Gareth Edwards, the man behind Monsters and Godzilla.
  3. Los Alamos was Rogue One’s working title.
  4. Both Jet Li and Donnie Yen were up for the role of spiritual warrior Chirrut Îmwe. The role ultimately went to Yen, and we think he did an excellent job!
  5. Dam Busters and The Guns of Navarone are two filmic influences – so if you enjoy movies about the underdog, then Rogue One is for you.
  6. Keep your eyes peeled on the costumes for a lack of buttons – they’re not allowed in Star Wars.
  7. Rogue One is the first Star Wars spin-off movie, forming part of a new anthology series. The next instalment is due for release in 2018. It will focus on Han Solo (played by Alden Ehrenreich) and has no title as yet.
  8. It’s the first Star Wars’ movie that doesn’t feature a score by John Williams. Don’t know who that is? If you’ve watched Harry Potter, Schindler’s List, Indiana Jones, Jaws and/or Jurassic Park then you will have heard his music.
