We review the latest Dwayne Johnson blockbuster.

If you have a fear of heights, Skyscraper may not be the movie for you…or maybe it’s the best way to get over your fear. All the height, without actually having to get up on that building yourself. That’s Dwayne Johnsons’ job, and he does it with style, flair, and one leg.

That’s pretty much the whole premise of the movie: Will Sawyer (played by Johnson) finds his family trapped in a burning building and must rescue them. That’s very little meat on the bones of a pretty scant skeleton of a story; but let’s be honest: the muscle we’re here to watch is The Rock.

He’s defied the jungle, an earthquake, and dominated the roads, so he’s not about to let a building stop him. The dizzying action set pieces are well executed and there are plenty of awesome special effects.

Of course, you’ll also get to watch Dwayne Johnson in action, using his body as the ultimate weapon, and only in defense or to maneuver his way through and around the burning building. It’s worth pointing out that he never resorts to using a gun on another human being.

Early in the film, Sawyer states he’s hasn’t touched a gun in ten years, and he sticks to this throughout the film. The nifty item that does get him out of a sticky situation or two is an absolute must-know life hack, and adds a comedic touch to the movie.

Let’s not forget the rest of the cast. Nineties’ teen slasher geeks will geek out at seeing Neve Campbell once again avoiding crazy guys with knives. The bad guys are all very clichéd,  but the good guys are great, especially Byron Mann as Inspector Wu.

With breathtaking action, explosive effects, and a heroic Rock, Skyscraper delivers on all the action beats. Now…who’s up for some bungee-jumping?

Skyscraper will be released in cinemas nationwide on Friday 13 July.
