The Instant Restaurants may be over, but they've inspired many a viewer to step into the kitchen and test their culinary skills. Plus: the first ten episodes of Season 2 have offered a bounty of recipes for you to try. But if you're a newbie or just nervous in the kitchen never fear, because our kitchen hacks are here.

From creative cakes to jazzier drinks, here are ten kitchen hacks to help you make more food and less drama in the kitchen.

Shaping Up

Want to make eye-catching shapes and nifty numbers on your cake, but don’t fancy yourself much of an artist? Use cookie cutters to create the shapes and numbers of your choice with rainbow sprinkles, chocolate chips, or whatever takes your fancy.

Better Biscuits

Keep your biscuits fresh by storing them with an apple wedge or orange slice.

Green Guacamole

If you want to keep your guacamole green (as it should be), place it in a container and cover it with a layer of water. This keeps it from reacting with oxygen in the air and going brown.

Salty Soup

Adding water to oversalty soup can affect the flavour. If it does, try adding potatoes, pasta, or rice – they act as great absorbents.

Wood Works

To keep your pot from boiling over, balance a wooden spoon over the rim of the pot.

Say Goodbye to Smells

Is there a funny smell emanating from your fridge? Just place an open lemon or a bit of ground coffee inside.

Butter Brick

Need to bake with butter, but it’s hard as a brick? Soften it quickly and easily by placing it under a warm cup.

Jazz Up your Drink

Freeze grapes, berries, or slices of lemon or lime. Add them to water, fruit juice, or whatever beverage of choice you think deserves some fruity love.

Slip and Slide

Hate the way sticky ingredients stick to measuring cups? Spray your cups with cooking spray first and they’ll slide right out.

Well Oiled

Is your oil hot enough? Test the heat by dropping a bit of water into the pan. If it sizzles, you’re good to go.
