It’s been a long road of pressure-cooker competition on M-Net’s local reality cooking competition, My Kitchen Rules South Africa. From the eight teams that progressed to Kitchen HQ, Dirk and Bahia were the first to leave after their samoosas failed to impress the show's judges. Next to exit were Durban dynamos Minnie and Tee, whose attempt at a West Coast mussel pot frustrated our guest judging squad as well as regulars David and J’. A high-stakes, two-part cook-off proved too much for Bloem couple Maritsa and Maradine, and they became the third pair to leave Kitchen HQ.

This leaves just five teams in the competition: Rox and Spoen, Jalal and Adrie, Kim and Pashi, Donald and Luyanda, and Maj and Joleen, who will be fighting for a spot in the semi-finals in this week’s episode of My Kitchen Rules SA.

For a one-in-four chance at the R1 million prize, the home-cook teams will compete in their last People’s Choice challenge with the theme “food as art”. With foodies becoming more visually attuned and experiential diners, the MKR teams are required to mimic art with their food, drawing inspiration from the Nirox Sculpture Park in this challenge.

But it won’t just be regular members of the public determining who wins this one. Some of Johannesburg’s best-loved celebrities will be gathering to judge the dishes prepared by the top five. With celebrities such as Thembisa Mdoda, Chris Jaftha, and Renate Stuurman sampling the fare, the contestants will be nervously awaiting the results on the day that determines which four teams move forward and which team will be ending their My Kitchen Rules SA journey.

Tune in on Sunday 16 September to see who sizzles and who fizzles at this crucial stage of the competition.

My Kitchen Rules SA is broadcast on M-Net channel 101 every Sunday night at 18:00.
