National Health Insurance – Silver Bullet or Black Hole?

South Africa’s public healthcare is desperately under-funded with serious staff shortages, collapsing infrastructure and it’s overburdened with patients. Government believes that the proposed National Health Insurance Plan will be the panacea to saving a system in crisis.  While the details of the implementation of the NHI may be sketchy, a few things are certain – it is coming, it will be mandatory and the taxpayer will be paying for it. Carte Blanche analyses whether this plan really is the silver bullet.

Low Cost Lessons for SAA

With billions of rands in debt and mounting calls for the airline to shut its doors, the national carrier South African Airways, is in big trouble. SAA's executives say that unprofitable routes, inefficient planes and a bloated staff compliment are among the reasons for its financial woes. Now the state-owned carrier is on the hunt for an equity partner to acquire a stake in the airline. As SAA continues with yet another cost-cutting exercise designed to return the entity to profitability, Carte Blanche explores international low cost models that could provide the answers.

Home Hijacking

In an upwardly mobile residential complex on Gauteng’s East Rand, suburban bliss has turned to living hell as cunning building hijackers have systematically muscled in to take over one unit after another. Refusing to pay for rent, levies, water or electricity, they’re openly engaging in drug dealing and turf wars. Owners of the bonded townhouses are left having to pay their mortgages, while their children are at risk from the violence and intimidation. Law enforcement has been little help. Can home owners wrestle back their properties?

Future Mobility

No driver's seat and no steering wheel – the future of driving is autonomous and electric.  While the idea of cars controlling themselves may seem alarming to some, the first fully autonomous vehicle will arrive in South Africa by next year and the laws and infrastructure in the country will have to catch up quickly.  Carte Blanche explores the future of mobility.
