What kind of movie do you expect when you hear the title Den of Thieves? If you said, โheist movieโ youโd be correct. And thatโs exactly what weโre bringing you this weekend for your Sunday night movie on M-Net 101.
Before we watch Gerard Butler trying to stop a break in at the Federal Reserve in Den of Thieves, letโs crack down on some of our favourite heist movies.
- A Fish Called Wanda
Should you find yourself in a heist movie, there are a few things to look out for. One of the most important is a double-crosser, which in the case of this movie is just about everyone. Written by Monty Python member John Cleese, itโs a fun and funnier take on the heist movie that led to an Oscar nomination for Cleeseโs script shared with Charles Crichton, who was also nominated for Best Director. Kevin Kline took home a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his not-stupid performance as Otto West.
Fierce Creatures,ย the sequel to A Fish Called Wanda airs this March on M-Net Movies Smile.
- Heat
Michael Mann packs the heat (yes, we went there) in this โ90s crime classic. Acting giants and method extraordinaires Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are pitted against one another as one plans heists and the other tries to prevent them. Despite both appearing in The Godfather Part II, this movie marked the first time Pacino and De Niro shared the screen.

- Inside Man
A clever caper by director Spike Lee โ who recently won an Oscar with his co-writers for BlacKkKlansman โ features a stalwart cast that includes Clive Owen, Jodie Foster, Christopher Plummer, and Lee regular Denzel Washington. Itโs all about a bank robbery thatโs not really a bank robbery, all executed by the bad guys who are out to catch the good guys who are actually the bad guys. Expect diamonds.
- Oceanโs Eleven
A fresh, fun remake of the โ60s movie of the same name, itโs packed full of Hollywood stalwarts, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Julia Roberts. Clooney plays the title character who brings together a motley crew of characters to pull off the ultimate casino heist. A box-office success, it was followed by two sequels and a female-led reboot.

- Reservoir Dogs
The film that shot Quentin Tarantino to fame, it also features some diamonds. And a lot of really great actors sporting colourful names โ literally. Mr. Blonde, Mr. Blue, Mr. Brown, Mr. Orange, Mr. Pink, and Mr. White bungle a diamond heist and have to hide out in a warehouse trying to figure out what went wrong โ all while making a bloody mess (again, literally) while theyโre working things out. Awesome soundtrack included. But donโt expect tips.

- The Bank Job
Jason Statham shows a more serious side in this โ70s set crime caper based on an actual true story. Donโt worry! Itโs not a stuffy old drama. Thereโs plenty of action and suspense to keep you on your toes. But if youโre not a fan of the all-action Stath (does such a person exist?) youโll get to see real meat on the bones of this action piece, along with sexy cars and an even sexier exposรฉ of the royal family.
