Road Trip Movies Article

This weekend old and new Hollywood take a road trip as Robert De Niro and Zac Efron hit the road in Dirty Grandpa, your Sunday night movie at 21:00 on M-Net Movies Premiere. Ending up in Florida for the ultimate spring break, the movie is half road movie, half holiday movie, all fun. As weโ€™ve already looked at holiday movies here, we thought weโ€™d take a closer peek at ten great road movies.

  1. Almost Famous (2000)

When thereโ€™s rock โ€˜nโ€™ roll, you know thereโ€™ll be road. A semi-autobiographical film by Cameron Crowe, it follows a Rolling Stone journalist as he trails the sex, drugs and rock โ€˜n' roll of fictional band Stillwater and their Band-Aids. A young Kate Hudson delivers a glowing performance as one of the latter.

  1. Easy Rider (1969)

No list of the genre would be complete without this seminal addition to the pantheon of road movies, fronted by counterculture icons Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. Renowned for its exposition of the American dream, it was a huge success in the late โ€˜60s and remains a classic not just of its genre, but of American cinema in general.

  1. Harold and Kumar go to White Castle (2004)

Itโ€™s all about the munchies for Harold and Kumar, who will go wherever the road takes themโ€ฆas long as itโ€™s to White Castle for a big juicy burger. With hysterical chemistry between its leads John Cho and Kal Penn, you can also look forward to appearances by Ryan Reynolds and Neil Patrick Harris.

  1. Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

This endearing film is packed with moments that will tug at your heartstrings and is filled with an incredible cast who give it their all. From the cute-as-a-button Olive (portrayed by a young Abigail Breslin) to her heroin-snorting grandfather โ€“ played with aplomb by Alan Arkin โ€“ itโ€™s a cast of characters as diverse as the kookiest family can get.

  1. The Mad Max Quadrilogy (1979 โ€“ 2015)

To quote from another movie: itโ€™s a โ€œroaring rampage of revengeโ€. This line from Kill Bill perfectly sums up the wrath and rage that fuel the dystopian trilogy, fronted by a young Mel Gibson as Max Rockatansky. Thirtyย years later Tom Hardy would take over the title character, joined on his own wasteland-wandering road trip with Charlize Theron in top form, as Imperator Furiosa.

  1. The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)

Chronicling the road trip Che Guevara and Alberto Granada embarked on in their youth, The Motorcycle Diaries is a rollicking romp through South America. Its lighter moments are alternated with the harsh social conditions the two encounter, forging Cheโ€™s path as a future revolutionary.

  1. National Lampoonโ€™s Vacation (1983)

For family (mis)adventure on the road, this is where you should start. The Chevy Chase-starring road movie spawned an entire franchise with the definitive family holiday road movie followed by fun in Europe and Las Vegas. The most recent addition is the 2015 Vacation, which acts as part remake, part sequel.

  1. Rain Man (1988)

Another family film, Rain Man centres on Tom Cruiseโ€™s ruthless Charlie and his autistic savant brother, Raymond, played superbly by Dustin Hoffman. As different as chalk and cheese, the brothers are brought together by the death of their father, heading on a reluctant road trip that will teach Charlie as much about himself as about his long-lost brother.

  1. Road Trip (2000)

If your teen years were spent watching the laugh-out-loud, below-the-belt comedy of the American Pie movies, youโ€™ll love Road Trip. It even features American Pie alumnus, Sean William Scott.

  1. Thelma & Louise (1991)

Notice something abut this list? Most of the road trips involve men; but Thelma & Louise defied the norm with its buddy movie road trip that eschewed genre conventions, delivering a journey of guts, glory, plenty of heart, and two unforgettable leads in the form of Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon.
