M-Net’s SAFTA winning singing contest The Voice SA is entering a new phase on Sunday, 2 April with the brutal Battle Rounds. To get the 12 singers in their respective teams in tip-top shape, coaches Karen Zoid, Lira, Kahn Morbee and Bobby van Jaarsveld have called on some of their famous friends in the music business to lend a hand.

The four co-coaches who will assist in mentoring the vocal talent with intensive vocal training as well as performance coaching are superstars Riana Nel, Elvis Blue, Emo Adams and Jimmy Nevis.

Songstress Lira will be working with platinum-selling recording artist and SAMA winner Riana Nel, whose sister Nianell gave #TeamLira some valuable tips during Season 1’s Battle Rounds.  Riana confesses that she has always been a “massive fan of the show”, and The Voice SA fans will remember how she rocked the stage with Vusi Mahlasela during last season’s final.

Riana’s musical style has been described as “Pop and Country” but her roots are firmly placed in Gospel music, lending a great balance to Lira’s more soulful style. She is also a highly acclaimed song writer in the Afrikaans market, having even penned a song for coach Bobby van Jaarsveld.

Exuberant performer Emo Adams will add pizazz to his long-time friend Karen Zoid’s team. “I’ve always loved the approach of the show where the focus is on the talent,” Emo says. “There is a positivity that is injected into the talent on the show as the coaches have a personal one-on-one relationship with all of the singers.”  He has appeared Karen Zoid’s own talk show, Republiek van Zoid Afrika and also has his own TV series on kykNET called Jou Show Met Emo. With so much in common, Emo and Karen will create fireworks in the battle ring.

Coach Bobby enlisted the help of another young pop star in the music industry, Jimmy Nevis. 23-year-old Jimmy has a number of successes under his belt as a song writer and a performer, with three SAMA nominations, an MTV Africa Music Award nomination and a Channel O African Music Video Award nomination to his name. Just like Bobby, Jimmy has enjoyed numerous commercial radio successes with singles such as “Balloon”, “All About It” and “Misscato” to name a few. “I stopped waiting for someone to discover me and discovered myself… now I’m ready to show my discoveries to the world,” Jimmy has said – a mantra that will no doubt resonate will all of the upcoming talent that he will work with on The Voice SA.

Elvis Blue will be working alongside season 1’s winning coach, Kahn Morbee. Elvis’s star rose in the music industry after he won Idols SA in 2010 and since then he has kept fans in awe with three platinum and one gold selling album, with a long list of Top 10 singles to his name as well. Elvis straddles the English and Afrikaans markets in South Africa, and has won at least one SAMA for each album that he has ever released. Talking about his collaboration with Kahn Morbee, Elvis revealed: “A few years ago, my and Kahn’s paths started crossing and it’s been clear to me from the beginning what a great guy he is. Kahn is so passionate about his talent on The Voice SA, I don’t know how he is going to choose between them in the Battle Rounds!”

In the Battle Rounds each coach couples up the 12 members of their teams to sing against one another in pairs. The talent will have to step into the boxing ring-styled stage and literally Battle against each other vocally, singing the same song together. It is then up to their coach to determine which one of them will advance to the next round, and which one of them will end their Voice SA journey there and then.

The Battle rounds of the series will start on Sunday, 2 April, as The Voice SA takes a one week break tonight (Sunday, 26 March) to make way for the live broadcast of Miss South Africa.
