He's a veteran Voice who absolutely slayed last season, from his Blind Audition to the finale, but Gavin Edwards is no newcomer to the music business.

Gavin’s performance of A Great Big World’s “Say Something” was one of the high points of The Voice SA season 1, winning the performer three turns and an inspired pitch from Bobby that included bringing his family onto stage! It also set social media on fire.

But Gavin’s story is an interesting one – at 38 he’s a veteran performer, but he’s also had his share of troubles and stopped drinking alcohol before season 1 to make one final go at really breaking through in the music biz.

Gavin told The Voice SA viewers that his career started when he “sort of stole his sister’s boyfriend and started a band.” The boyfriend was Potchefstroom-born guitarist Robby De Sa and the band was called Allegory.

They later both joined cover band Franklin, and fortuitously they were playing at Sun City when ex-Westlife star Brian McFadden was on honeymoon. Impressed, McFadden immediately signed him to his own management and record label, Pig Records, in Ireland. Their 2004 single “You” hit the Irish Top 20, and they performed at top events like O2 In The Park and opened up for Incubus in Dublin.

Gavin and De Sa left Franklin in 2007 to pursue their new project, which took them to L.A, London and Australia, where a 2011 single was featured on the Oz version of Dancing With The Stars and Sunrise, and he also supported Enrique Iglesias. Closer to home, Gavin also finished in the Top 7 in the first season of X Factor.

But it was really twenty-one years of “nearly there” for the singer, and the booze had affected his rhythm and his voice, so he packed it in. And it worked a charm - Gavin got a new lease of musical life and made it all the way to the season 1 finale, finsihing second to Richard Stirton.

He released the album 'Silver Skies' later in 2016 - check it out on Apple Music.
