Located in Mpumalanga, and forming the northern part of the Drakensberg escarpment, Blyde River Canyon is the third largest canyon in the world.
It’s also just near where my mother was born and grew up, so now I’ll have the chance to share it with our children.
Much of the canyon is bordered by the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, which winds its way north from the little town of Graskop, where my grandparents lived and are buried. I’ll prepare a picnic to enjoy at the edge of the Canyon, overlooking the Drakensberg Escarpment and the Blyde River as it snakes prettily down to the lowveld.
