From the days of Fred Astaire and Gingers Rogers to the Step Up movies of the 21st century, dance movies have long had firm footing in Hollywood. Just as songs form the backbone of musicals, so does choreography do the same for dance movies.
There are a multitude of genres and styles, and Hollywood has covered practically everything. From ballet in The Red Shoes and The Company to hip hop in Stomp the Yard and Honey it’s all there, with talented dancers and actors burning up the screen in masterfully choreographed scenes.
In recent times dance movies have become renowned for weak plotting and poor characterisation. However, one thing is for sure: the dancing is always top-notch – and frankly, that’s what we’re here for.
That’s not to say they are always lacking in everything but style. Black Swan, Magic Mike, Billy Elliot, Strictly Ballroom and The Full Monty have bucked the trend, delivering cinematic punch not only in terms of skills on the dance floor, but also in terms of strong stories, well-rounded characters and plenty of heart.
Step Up has made its mark on the scene not only with its breathtaking choreography and talented cast, but by creating a dance movie franchise. Musicals and dance movies don’t easily spawn sequels, so the first instalment achieved quite a feat in this regard.
Step Up: All In is the fifth, and reportedly final, instalment in the franchise. Stars from the previous movies head to Las Vegas for an unforgettable dance showdown, and it will leave you cheering from your seat.
