From cult director David Fincher comes Gone Girl, a chilling thriller about the fragility of marriage and fidelity. Watch it on Sunday, 30 August, at 20:30ย on M-Net and 21:00 on M-Net Movies Premiere.
Fincher is notorious for his intense method of filmmaking, but the results speak for themselves. From Se7en and Fight Club to The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo he does not balk at dealing with tough topics or grim settings.
In Gone Girl, based on a novel by Gillian Flynn who also wrote the screenplay, the scrupulous director takes a hard look at marriage. On the surface Nick and Amy might seem like the perfect couple, but thereโs something much darker lurking underneath โ and it all comes to a head onย their fifth wedding anniversary.
Portraying Nick and Amy are Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. The former has been making leaps and bounds in his career as both an actor and a director, and his career comeback story is one not often told in Hollywood.
English actressย Pike expertly blends grit, ice and vulnerability into a powerhouse performance that blew audiences and critics out the water, garnering an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role this year.
Coming as somewhat of a surprise in a supporting role is Neil Patrick Harris. Accustomed as we are to seeing him in comedic roles โ when heโs not hosting the Oscars or the Tony Awards โ his casting in a dark drama came as an interesting change. Fincherโs faith was not misplaced and he deftly guides the actor through a remarkable performance.
Another casting surprise was Tyler Perry, whom weโve become so used to seeing as the tough-as-nails granny Madea. Fincher proved twice in one movie that he knew what he was doing, but was already confident the moment he met Perry that he wanted to cast him.
