Fans of the long-running medical drama will be happy to hear that Grey’s Anatomy is back for a 12th season and will be brought to you Express from the U.S.

Starting on 26 September, fans can tune into M-Net at 02:00 for the Express show, or catch it in prime time from Monday 28 September at 19:30.

To prepare for its return, enjoy these ten fun facts that you may not have known about Grey’s Anatomy.

  1. Show creator Shonda Rhimes wanted to set Grey’s Anatomy in her hometown, Chicago, but decided against it since E.R. had been set in the same city.
  2. The show was originally called Complications. The title was changed to Grey’s Anatomy, which references the main character, as well as the anatomy book by Henry Gray, Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body.
  3. Isaiah Washington auditioned for Dr. Shepherd's role, but landed the part of Dr. Burke; while Sandra Oh auditioned for Dr. Bailey's role, but ended up playing Cristina Yang.
  4. Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey, was named the ninth highest paid television actress in 2011.
  5. Pompeo commented in 2014, that once Grey’s Anatomy comes to an end, she might stop acting.
  6. When the show started, Pompeo was making $200 an episode. She now earns over $350 000 per episode.
  7. The name of each episode is the title of a song.
  8. Cristina was the first person to call Dr. Shepherd “McDreamy”, and Meredith was the first to call Dr. Sloan “McSteamy”.
  9. Justin Chambers, who plays Dr. Alex Karev, has been a regular cast member since Season 1. However, he was not in the pilot; but the writers added his character in through reshoots, because they thought George O’Malley (portrayed by T.R. Knight)  needed a male counterpart.
  10. Patrick Dempsey, who played Dr. Derek Shepherd, was terrified of Shonda Rhimes when he auditioned. He thought she hated him, but she was actually just distracted by his dreamy looks.
