The Hidden Cost of Food

An estimated 14 million South Africans go to bed hungry every evening. Carte Blanche asks: are these price increases justified and how will South Africans feed their families in the near future?

Transphobia

Transgender children face major barriers when trying to navigate the school system, such as accessing bathrooms, wearing gender-specific school uniforms and being accepted onto school teams. These teens find it harder to adjust to an educational structure which isn’t designed to accept their gender identities.  Carte Blanche asks whether schools are fully prepared to receive transgender children.

Chrome Zama Zamas

While mining companies slug it out in court over mineral rights, illegal miners are scraping the mountainside bare in Limpopo making off with millions of rands worth of chrome every day. Far from ordinary illegal miners with picks and shovels, the large scale, sophisticated mining of chrome is booming. But is the state doing enough to protect our natural resources? Carte Blanche investigates.

Mind-Controlled Robotic Arm

Imagine being in an accident that renders you quadriplegic and unable to feel any sensation in your arms and fingers. Now imagine regaining that sensation, a decade later, through a mind-controlled robotic arm that is directly connected to your brain. Carte Blanche meets the researchers who’ve developed a remarkable robotic arm that’s not only controlled by the mind, but also allows the operator to actually feel what they are touching.
